    so PSA: if you’re wanting to mirror an expression you think an East Asian person is making? Don’t do the squinty eyes. I don’t care if you think their eyes are squinty. Especially if you’re White. Just don’t do it. Thanks.

    and as I got older it lessened because the community got to know me as a person and I was tall and confident and outspoken, but it still hurts, especially as I unpack and re-examine those early years. And for someone to casually trigger those memories, only to tell me I’m the one who’s racist??? No

    it was that bad. I had kids following me around scrunching up their faces and eyes and when I’d tell them to stop, they’d tell me they were copying my face. I got the old fingers tugged at the corners of the eyes thing, “Chinese, Japanese, dirty knees” etc.

    as I’m getting older, I’m examining a lot of my childhood and realizing that I did experience a lot of blatant racism regarding my appearance that I did not quite understand at 7 years old. So the adage I give now that it wasn’t “that bad” growing up in a small town, that’s not true anymore

    a hard thing about being a POC who was raised in a very very White area and has relationships with well meaning people who “don’t see colour” is when they do something racist it’s very hard to call it out and advocate for oneself
