In proposing today's changes to immigration rules Labour proves itself to consider migrants disposable and "less than" others. It also proves itself to be the most racist and xenophobic government in living memory. These reforms are too toxic to "tweak", they need scrapping entirely. 8/

The simple fact of the matter is that these reforms will put more people in precarious positions. They will increase homelessness and destitution. They will fuel discrimination against migrants, undermining community cohesion. They will fuel the far right and they will harm the economy. 7/

While we hear a lot, fairly, about the need to protect care workers, these reforms will cause harm for a significant number of people, in doing so also undermining the whole country. The evidence of the harm to the economy alone by attacking migrants is well documented. 6/

Moreover though it is fundamentally damaging to social and community cohesion. It automatically sets migrants up as essentially second class, expected to work for free when others don't. In reality is also plays into anti-immigration talking points of "takers", but Mahmood knows this. 5/

The "contribution" element has already faced criticism from many charities. Not only does it make volunteering de facto compulsory, kind of against the whole principle, for some, it also adds pressure on charities, volunteers take time and resources. 4/
