    To conclude, the same evaluative logic that links election outcomes to democratic satisfaction also links intra-party outcomes to organizational cohesion. We also discuss what our findings could mean for center-right parties (see image). 8/8

    Our reading of the results is that coalition outcomes carry different political meanings for different camps within the party. A purely dispositional account, in which conservative-leaning elites react more negatively to any unfavorable outcome did not seem to be the case. 7/8

    We also hypothesized that experiences of losing/winning would be related to ideological positions within the party along the liberal-conservative axis. Our data was supportive of this. Conservative local elites were more negative losers than liberals (however, only in SDP coalition treatment). 6/8

    This was followed by a random assignment to either government coalition. The design allowed us to test whether winners and losers of the coalition formation decision would differ in their attitudes (and behavior) towards the party. This was indeed the case, as winner-loser gap emerged. 5/8
