    Marx and Engels knew a bunch of German communists who fought for the union, mostly in Missouri. The most famous are August Willich (who was more of a frenemy to Marx and made general) and Joseph Weydemeyer, who they were friends with and jokingly called "the eternal colonel" in letters.

    One of the first! There were also many mostly Gullah fighters engaged in partisan warfare in South Carolina behind enemy lines who were never formally organized into regiments.

    And most freedmen who fought for the Union did so in the USCT, which were not raised by any particular states, but a majority of their ranks would have been born in the South.
