But at the same time, the purely lexical intelligibility between the Sinitic languages means that for the most part, place names originating in Sinitic are equally coherent; it's when you get beyond the Sinitic areas that it goes a bit funky.

I mean re:China, most linguists wouldn't call Sinitic languages 'dialects' of a singular 'Chinese' language, and there are also quite large numbers of non-Sinitic languages as well that ought not to be overlooked (despite China's best efforts to eradicate them over the years).
