Fighting a small group of NIMBYs concedes the principle that some residents can be more special than others. The message has to be that every neighborhood, without exceptions, has to absorb its share of the growth. Every NIMBY citywide wants to claim their area is different. You can’t brook that.

That sometimes ends up creating even larger push back as any new growth/development is associated with monstrous towers, which could be coming next to your neighborhood if you legalize any more density!

And it’s all related! The reason why we have to pack all these towers into small nodes around the city is exactly because we aren’t allowed to add any meaningful density around most single family areas in the GTHA. Even gentle density like ADUs receive push back as exemplified by this article.

This built form makes sense Downtown… but so many of these clusters in Mississauga, Vaughan, North York, Scarborough, etc where there is absolutely no need to do this. I’d be fine if the land values/demand actually required it but it’s because of artificially distorted zoning and lopsided priorities

…so u get all negatives of living in fairly small unit that’s usually made up for where the city is your backyard, except you live in a suburban wasteland and still have to travel an hour to get to anything fun. There are so many more of these artificial “vertical suburbs” in Toronto + greater area
