    The Karrakin Cavalry College, the BUC, and indeed the KTB's entire system of nobility is self-perpetuating and self-reproducing. The human element is bloody grease in the wheel as it turns - fungible and replaceable. Empire is a machine serving nothing and nobody but its own continued existence.

    And if you do conform, then what? You find yourself transformed by the institution into a form better able to serve its goals: educate other pilots. Propagate its ideas and ideals. Enforce discipline. Be a loyal and obedient servant to Karrakis. Legitimise Karrakin military and political identity.

    The reason they don't want you to see this is because it reveals the artifice of the entire affair. The institution does not exist for your benefit, you exist for *its* benefit. Your humanity is of secondary concern to the demands of empire. If you won't, you will be replaced, and someone else will.
