    Bell graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1957 as the only Black student in his class. After passing the bar, he joined the newly established Civil Rights Division of the DOJ. He resigned in protest in 1959 after his superiors ordered him to end his NAACP membership. /2

    In 1960, Thurgood Marshall recruited Bell to serve as assistant counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Bell spearheaded the case to enroll James Meredith at Ole Miss in 1962 and oversaw more than 300 school desegregation cases, observing white power structures adapt to Black legal victories. /3

    Bell was appointed deputy director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare in 1966. In 1969, he moved to Los Angeles to serve as the executive director of the Western Center on Law and Poverty at the University of Southern California. /4

    In 1969, Bell was recruited to teach at Harvard Law School following student protests demanding African American faculty. He achieved tenure at Harvard Law in 1971. In 1973, he published Race, Racism and American Law, which established itself as the definitive legal textbook on civil rights law. /5
