One of the reasons I fell in love with King's Field 1 (JP), was entirely because of its controls and its slowness. If it wasn't exactly like how it was the feeling of being somewhere dangerous would of been trivialized.

I… think they froze time on the way to the castle during that first trip? I’ve been doing a lot of exploring and no night cycle What a strange choice, getting locked out of castle town and stuck outside at night with the stalchildren was such a universal experience in the OG

I think this is common enough now that you could call it a phenomenon, where the defining limitations of a classic game are removed, and players call it an "improvement" on "clunky" mechanics and controls. IMO the mechanics define games as much if not more than the themes or aesthetic vibe.
