Ver postWanna do something extra fucked up to your players? Just tell them! They'll have a better idea of what's going on, will self-select into the extra harsh stuff, and will enjoy the whole process even more!
Ver postDefinitely picked this up from writing for Fallen London, but it's also a huge mainstay in my work ever since the Snake Farm era. You show an open door with a horrible thing behind it, and you let them walk straight through
Ver postOne of my favorite and most effective design patterns is "tell the player exactly what you're gonna do to them, then do it." You can be SIGNIFICANTLY meaner to the player if you simply tell them ahead of time that that's exactly what you'll be doing, and also the suspense of the warning is a delight
