    I've been tracking this aesthetic in memes since about 2022 (starting with NATOwave edits, which boomed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine) and it's actually kind of genius. It's a subversion of a fashy meme aesthetic that exploits a major loophole in that aesthetic: the era it riffs on.

    Also, it's another example of this thing I'm always yelling about: democratic leftism, progressivism, and liberalism have developed an unfortunate ick about using effective (and affective) propaganda and yield the space to fashy weirdos. Perpetual retreat from the icky is not a strategy for winning.
