Normally I feel that adaptation of any kind needs to go all-in on a single approach. Otherwise you get what I call "Treasure Planet syndrome." Nintendo, however, are the only artists capable of nuance and are therefore exempt.

Sometimes they have the first few seconds just be the OG. Other times they bring in a single instrument for just a bar. It's such a strange and wonderful layer cake of nostalgia. That kind of layering seems present throughout all aspects of the game too.

The OoT remake soundtrack does something so clever by keeping at least one instrument from the original version in almost every track. A really clever wake to make sure the song hits the same, even with a modern arrangement. Sometimes you really just can't compete with a 30 year old midi flute.
