    Americans were saying wait until the midterms and we'll make everything better. Canadians have been telling Americans since Trump got elected that we are never going to trust you again. It will take generations to restore trust.

    This is exactly the correct appraisal from Röttgen. Trump is a symptom, not the cause. The best case scenario for foreseeable future is that US is a fickle ally whose foreign policy may change every four years. And it could turn actively hostile, perhaps even more so than during the last year.
