it's important not to lose sight of the fact that the people who incessantly obsess over fake "metrics" like "WARP" are doing so because they are in the first instance ideologically opposed to progressive goals and have invented a number that "proves" them correct

the reason WARP makes sense in a sports context is that you can largely abstract a player as being represented by their production. the personality only matters at the very extremes. this is the opposite of what political candidates are, who are mostly personality.

this doesn't mean candidate quality is fake, it just means that whatever "WARP" is doesn't measure it. it's a holistic evaluation that only tangentially touches on ideology as such. candidates, unlike sports players, are not actually directly substitutable for each other

the centrist line is that if the left does badly, a centrist would have done well, and if the left does well then a centrist would have done even better. first, there's no reason to believe this, but second, even if it were true, so what? you can't bank margins!
