Because it is like something being her, she can imagine what it is like being you, and come to terms with you. If there is no one else conscious around, though, because everyone else is built purely for speed, there is no one to negotiate with. She has no place in the universe anymore.

But that was a choice. These are people who brought vampires back precisely because they were non-conscious, fast, and predatory. They deliberately built a world where consciousness and empathy have no use. Or so I read it.
