  As Ned Flanders would say... "This su-diddly-ucks". The only word I can come up with to describe it is: "Apocalyptic". (And I spelled it correctly on the first try.) Also, to quote Richard Feynman: "Nature's gonna do what Nature's gonna do." We can mitigate it, but not control it.

  Alaska and New Mexico are the only two states where August is the 3rd warmest month of the year (statewide average) For New Mexico this is a southwest monsoon effect. For Alaska, this is a result of the onset of the fall wet season.

  schematic depiction of Maddox et al. (1979)'s "synoptic" pattern for flash floods, redrawn by John Peters for a review article several years ago. (a) is at onset, (b) at a later time. This pattern is going to be in place for like the next four days in the mid-south, with major flooding expected.
