I should not be surprised by this after seeing how White men write about domestic and sexual abuse. Story after story, they link the strength within those victimized not to the act of healing or finding a way to live, but to fighting back. A "strong" victim is one ready to die fighting next time.

in revolt is the easier and faster option than living in bondage to work for the freedom of those you love, believe they would face the blades, rope, and fire with head held high. They learn nothing of enslaved people because they are content to place themselves into a modified noble savage myth.

As I muddle my way through yet another White fantasy author attempting to write enslaved people something struck me. Just as White Republicans vote as if they're temporarily impoverished millionaires, White fantasy authors write as if every last one of them is a Nat Turner waiting for the revolt.

They write enslavement and the thoughts of the enslaved as a clean black and white; to die free or even pursuing freedom is clean and good while to fall under bondage, or worse accept it, is a craven, cowardly deed of men too weak to fight. They, who have never known what it means to realize dying
