They were bad movies. This is the most prominent thing about them. People willfully misunderstanding their content is at least partially downstream of the fact they were poorly written and badly acted.

Given that abusers typically want to disconnect their victims from support networks it does frighten me that he may well have succeeded in that too, though I don't think any of the Democratic response has been unreasonable on the available evidence

Fwiw from the reporting we've seen so far it does seem very plausible that Stevens is an abusive relationship. One can think what one wants about how that relates to moral responsibility, but it seems like a variety of sources pointing in a similar direction 🤷🏽
