    off topic but students also like being lectured to in real life considerably more than students like being lectured to in online discourse about what students like I don't know how I feel about that, since I almost never write out more than bullet points for lectures, but it's been true for years

    but I'm on record as saying that the equally evergreen comment vs question discourse is also silly because questions can be performative and self-indulgent and comments can be informative and helpful, if you're working on something that others in the room know about so make of that what you will

    anyway my least favourite genre of conference presentation is neither chat w/slides nor laboured paper but "here's the story of how we got the grant for the project on the subject that this talk sounded like it was going to be about"
