    I also feel like I got a lot better at what I do when I realized that I shouldn't be trying to guess at what will make other people happy. I should just try to make the thing I would want to see as an audience member. The perfect story doesn't exist, so just make yours.

    You can find a way to articulate why it works for YOU, or try to figure out what may have caused general audiences to bounce off of something, but any story worth a damn won't be told completely by the numbers. You learn the "rules" so that you can learn how to strategically break them.

    A lot of people who think of themselves as media critics seem to be intent on finding an objective formula for what makes a story good or bad, some way to feel validated about the things they like and dislike. Anyone attempting that will inevitably fail, stories aren't objective.
