    fixing that problem is, in my opinion, more important than fixing the inflation rate. you can tell yourself "this was an inflation election" all you want. but bringing the inflation rate down from 3.4% to 2.5% is not going to quell this anger, and unless you do, america will turf you as well.

    it is this feeling of helplessness and anger that has proved such a fertile ground for populism, especially reactionary populism and yet also: there is *something* people are reacting to, some structural failures in politics and the economy

    what drives people so mad is this feeling that the country is out of our control. that our country is *under* the control of "someone else" who does not care about us. maybe that's billionaires or corporations or "the epstein class" or "the jewish islamo-communist feminazis" (depends on who you ask)

    this is where i think longwell's qualitative methods are actually quite useful. she remarks that when people talk about the economy, they also *constantly* refer to a feeling of powerlessness. i think this is key.

    i find it troubling the extent to which the progressive commentariat has settled on "this was an economy election." "this was about inflation." yes, people express extreme anger about the economy. but they are voting like trump just re-started the great depression. this should strike you as odd!
