    I myself had late-stage cancer & had messed up my insurance. I didn’t have a partner, writing is an unstable job, & I lost a lot of friends having cancer: if the Irish government hadn’t provided me with free chemotherapy I would be dead, or in shattering medical debt.

    I volunteer for cancer patients online as well as in person, & I have been asked to do those maths. ‘What are the chances of survival vs kids lose the house & their parent. Be honest.’ Though nobody should listen to me over medical professionals, I have been honest. I’ve seen people stop treatment.
