Even a temporary rise above 1.5°C can leave lasting damage to Earth’s ice: report with @juliusgarbe.github.io shows how cutting emissions & bringing temperatures back down can limit ice loss & slow sea-level rise. Some impacts still can't be reversed on human timescales. iccinet.org/overshoot/

The world's glaciers are disappearing before our eyes. A major new report warns that even if global warming exceeds 1.5°C and temperatures later fall, some ice loss may be irreversible. iccinet.org/overshoot/ 📷 Lewis Pugh at Nigardsbreen Glacier, Norway, in 2007, 2022 and 2026.

What does exceeding the 1.5°C, the lower Paris Agreement limit, mean for the Earth’s ice? Today, ICCI is releasing two new reports that summarise why overshoot must be kept to the absolute minimum to limit the global damage from melting ice. ❄️🧪🌊

Not sure we say this clearly enough... Even if we bring global temps back down after overshooting 1.5C, we won't undo all the damage. Lost glaciers, melting ice sheets, rising sea levels and thawing permafrost could leave a legacy lasting centuries or longer. www.theguardian.com/science/2026...
