Perhaps if evolution has solved the problem of frequent jet lag, we could learn a thing or two from these animals!
Voir le postSo, what does this tell us? It tells us that shearwaters are using the sun as their primary or only compass cue when travelling over hundreds or thousands of kilometres of ocean. And it also means they experience the same process that leads to jet lag in humans!
Voir le postWe find that the measured biases closely match those expected from the use of the sun compass and the time-shifts these birds experience by travelling east or west.
Voir le postShearwaters show a really clear behavioural switch when they begin homing back to their colony after foraging. So, we can identify these periods, where we know they’re aiming for their nest and can measure any biases in their orientation.
Voir le postIf birds use the sun, then as they move east their orientation should be biased more and more clockwise. Birds in this study racked up time-shifts of up to an hour, corresponding to sun compass errors of up to ~20°.
