dragon's dogma 2 and queen's domain have cemented my conviction in this weird engine idea i had recently, based on the displacement mapped raycaster i made. the idea is base geometry (could be terrain primitive + freeform, or all freeform meshes) at manageable detail + dynamic LOD + displacement.
