A 5,000-year-old Neolithic #knife, the blade was made of flint and fastened with birch tar in a handle made of poplar wood. The handle has a hole for attaching a cord. Birch tar, made by heating the tree's bark, was used since the Paleolithic period as an adhesive - a prehistoric glue. 🧵1/2 📷 me 🏺

The Roman shipwreck at Comacchio, Italy, is over 21 m long and 5.62 m wide. It was discovered in 1980 during the maintenance of a drainage canal. The vessel was loaded with amphorae, lead ingots, and boxwood logs. It dates to the 1st c. BC. 📷Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici Emilia Romagna 🏺

This was the first of three major bridges built across this part of the Firth of Forth in three different centuries. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot... #Scotland #Queensferry

This #FrescoFriday we travel to the tomb of Gaius Vestorius Priscus, Pompeii. This scene is part the inner west wall of the tomb and depicts gladiators squaring off. It seems reasonable to suppose this fresco captures a fight held in honour of the departed Gaius Vestorius Priscus.
