In browser engines and web standards, we might say "don't break the web" but also compatibility, site compat, or backwards compat. And it's something that's been formalized in Blink's launch process, with a lot of detailed examples in docs.google.com/document/d/1... by @rbyers.net.

We included them because they're available as metrics to help evaluate the state of your site. Not everything is a direct search ranking factor! There are plenty of ways to improve the experience of a website, and sometimes having metrics makes it easier to discuss / work on it, "SEO" or not.
