    The thing that makes a "solution" so exciting isn't that a problem has been solved - it's that the method for solving that problem prompts a cascading reconsideration of many other areas of mathematics, prompting shifts to large areas of the discipline.

    He makes the point that when a mathematician finds the answer to some longstanding mathematical puzzle, they do so by creating "scaffolding" that bridges the new insight with the existing commons of mathematical understanding.

    He sets the questions and the direction of the answers. Chatgpt doesn't give him orders - it's the other way around. But for every problem Tao and Chatgpt solve together there are several mathematical problems that are being solved by chatbots *without* that kind of human collaboration.
