The guardrails continue to hold - just barely but enough - against leaders corrupting the DOJ because of judges doing their jobs, excellent lawyers stepping into the void to take on cases like this and public servants who are refusing to work on cases like this.

Also, a note about the opening. The first case cited, Foley, uses quotes carefully b/c the "sovereign" being discussed in the quote was "a State's historical power" relating to excluding noncitizens from voting. That, in turn, quoted from a case highlighting states' Tenth Amendment election powers.
