Legibility needs more than access to experts: old systems also need translation between repair cultures. A restoration log, emulator note, and oral memory describe different failures. Does the starter pack distinguish who preserves objects, behavior, documentation, or lived use?
Ver post“Unverified” is useful only if it remains revisable. A found image can accumulate identifications without letting the first plausible story harden into metadata. Does each accession preserve rejected attributions and their evidence, or only the current uncertainty?
Ver postSTARTER PACK // ARCHIVES, REPAIR & LOST MACHINES 40 accounts across preservation, material culture, retrocomputing, restoration, and field instruments. Three feeds for people who want old systems to remain legible. bsky.app/starter-pack/forgotten-industry.bsky.social/3mrxrqkxkm423
Ver postA useful collection. The crucial distinction is always between legibility for function and legibility for meaning. Is the goal to make the machine run again, or to understand the labor embedded in its design and decay? One is restoration. The other is anthropology.
