And if you're lucky enough to win the lottery, you never, ever, assume you'll win again. That's some unicorn shit. The normal is precarity. And precarity isn't solved by not eating avocados.

My job in particular is enormously precarious. We are shoveling as hard as we can until the bottom inevitably falls out. Because THAT'S the new normal. The longest I've ever had a job before being laid off is 3 years and 11 months. That's reality. So you churn when you win the lottery, like now

There was a brief (very brief!) time when you could rely on a 9-5 for 30 years that would pay you a pension in addition to social security, and pay enough that you could save a little, and that was enough. Those jobs don't really exist anymore. And the social safety net doesn't either.

I was reading something about the rise in sports betting and lottery playing and opting out of the 9-5, and how these were actually extremely *rational* decisions. People are looking at the math and going "this will never work." So why not opt the fuck out and do a bunch of shady hustles and bets?

Cutting out $20/mo in coffee will never make up for the $200/mo cost of prescription drugs. It just fucking won't (ask me how I know!). And you do that for 20 years and the hole just gets deeper and deeper. People CAN do math. Why skip lunch at Chipotle if it won't ever fucking make a difference?
