Throwing the emphasis more on stats and skills just makes for a richer more diverse character range, and lets players be confident in areas they want to be.

Though I tend to prefer baccarat (roll under stat+skill) systems myself.

For me, attributes and skills are given more weight in gameplay. On a roll plus stat vs DC system, I would take the value over 10 as the positive modifier. So a stat of 15 gives you +5, a stat of 18 +8. Skills could go as high as, say, +10. This reduces dice swing impact.

It also calms down the character power curve and gives players a better sense of being in control of their character's development rather than climbing a ladder.
