The US granted visas to Jews but only allowed 30,000 in from Germany a year. You had to wait for your number to come up. Meet Robert Smallbones. An unassuming British diplomat who 'hacked' this system so effectively (saving 48 THOUSAND Jews) the UK government kept his scheme secret for decades /1 🧵

I like to highlight Robert Smallbones to people because he was an administrator and diplomat who, faced with the horrors of antisemitism and abduction in Germany, did what he could. He wasn't perfect. His views on homosexuality were not great, even for the time. But he saw wrong, and he acted /END

Smallbones died in 1976. He seems never to have talked about what he did. I suspect like others he felt guilt at not saving more. The British Government acknowledged the existence of the Smallbones Scheme in 2008. He was posthumously awarded the medal of a British Hero of the Holocaust in 2013 /22

Smallbones was privately thanked for his efforts, then asked to keep the success of his Jewish evacuation visa scheme quiet. It was felt it may cause issues with both the British public and the US government. In December 1939, he became Consul General in Brazil, where he retired in 1945. /21

At war's start, Smallbones was evacuated back to Britain along with all other diplomatic staff and their families. By this point he had made the Nazi list of people to be rounded up, if Britain was invaded. He enquired how many people had gotten visas through his scheme. 48,000 Jews. /20
