    This can work if the person from outside is given the right team around them, with mutual respect for both the questioning and the navigating. But this respect can need time to develop, which is rarely available if the ‘real world’-er is meant to come in, shake things up & deliver.

    I think it's one of the key skills in life to be able to distinguish between 'this seems MAD - but that shows I don't understand things and need to learn' and 'this seems MAD - and so I've got a brilliant insight and need to change things'!

    I often see parallels between Whitehall/Westminster and the world of big multinational corporations, especially with franchise structures or regional units with strong identities. You can perhaps see the parallels... Did you find that people from such backgrounds adapted better?

    When you build a cabinet you have ~10 very important and diverse jobs and 30 important one and a good parliamentary party should have 4-5 candidates for each job that have some deep expertise outside of politics to help guide their views on what might actually work.
