    What I was most distracted by was that I’d seen a copy just before. Someone put one on my door. It was gutting, it made me feel dirty just for leaving the house. It was violating and degrading. I felt like everyone was staring. And it made me worry that this was the start of things to come. It was.

    I went through the granular level polling data months later and could see where they’d targeted. They’d clearly chosen specific voters on purpose, figuring they could neutralize some of the deep blue areas of Boston with lies. It was terrifying how effective it was. No one ever faced consequences.

    The week before the election, mailers went out in Spanish that claimed men were hiding in the stalls of elementary school girls’ bathrooms, filming them. They said the initiative would make that legal. They said “no”— which would allow the protections to sunset— was actually a no to the filming.

    I hadn’t been trying to make some grand point, I was actually apologizing if i seemed distracted. Even though we won, I’ve never stopped being distracted since. I’ve never recovered from the experience of having to apologize for being afraid like that. I’m lucky my students were amazing about it.

    Been thinking a lot about what it was like in 2018 when ballot initiative 3 was threatening to roll back protections in MA for trans people. I was teaching nights at BU. I remember telling my students that by the end of class I would know if I was still allowed to use bathroom I’d used before class.
