2/3 Soul cakes are small, spiced cakes associated with the old custom of 'souling', when people went from house to house offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food. In later years children took part, often singing souling songs.

1/3 Yesterday my husband and I had a go at making soul cakes using an English Heritage recipe recommended by folklorist Icy Sedgwick. We saved them to eat today for All Souls' Day.
