    The choice to never go back to England wasn't to stay "on track" with the walk. He lived in Mexico for years, per his Wikipedia, so he could have seen his mom, child, and later his grandchild at any point in the last 28 years but chose to be a deadbeat dad

    Dude walked away from his son and the rest of his family, making an arbitrary vow never to return to England until his big walk was done. hard to imagine a mother leaving an 8-year-old behind for others to raise, never visiting again, and monetizing that choice for decades before returning as a hero

    this Werner Herzog-documented feat reminded me how much women's lives are constrained by the fact that they can't so easily up and abandon their children for a life of media-friendly adventure, both due to social expectations and the fact that any woman who did this would be ignored or condemned.
