I'm a big fan of checkpoint saves because they let the designer manage the tension/challenge. Descending into Nokron in Elden Ring is fantastic as the "where Grace?" player messages start to multiply. But that's abt death, not your save file. If Dark Souls can save and quit anywhere, any game can.
