    Amid the agonising about how Trump might react to a heavy defeat in the midterms, I feel like we didn’t think hard enough about what effect a heavy defeat would have on Trump. He came into power promising to move fast and break things; he ran into a firestorm of his own making and broke his party.

    For both sides the 2028 campaign starts now. The Democrats need to keep up the momentum and win the White House; the Republicans have to start thinking seriously about the post-Trump era and wake up to the fact that far from being an electoral asset, he is utterly toxic for their brand.
