I'd argue by the end of the prequels Anakin is doing kind of an Ayn Rand thing where he's unashamedly embracing being evil but also presenting it as a rationalization for why it's OK that he does this shit. He's basically Dark Helmet from Spaceballs. "Evil will always triumph because Good is dumb"

The “tragedy of Darth Plagueis” scene is legit the best thing in the prequels but they key to the scene working is that Anakin’s brain is a mirror-smooth ball rolling around inside his cranium as he falls for the most obvious con in the galaxy
