    But the main thing is that I don’t want my host government *or society* to turn fundamentally hostile to immigrants generally, or reciprocally towards brits in particular. I love my new country. I’ve tried to contribute to it the best I can. I don’t want it to hate me (or anyone).

    I’m angry about the immigration changes, because they are unnecessary and arbitrary and Britain needs care and health workers more than ever; I’m also angry because they are justifying it with an outright, bald faced lie. Settlement is not automatic. It is not almost automatic. That is untrue.

    I'm sorry, 'almost automatically'?? There is nothing close to automatic with ILR. The only automatic thing is that after 5 years you are allowed to ask for it. You still have to jump through financial and bureaucratic hoops and you're not at all guaranteed to get it at the end.
