  Once that goodwill is gone, the system will struggle to function, and costs will rise if even some of these ‘hidden’ duties have to be paid for—or, worse, don’t get done at all. With a worsening crisis in university funding, the government messes with academia at its peril.

  My own contract states: “You will be expected to work such hours as are reasonably necessary for the proper performance of your duties and responsibilities”. Those duties and responsibilities are specified as research, teaching and admin as directed by my Head of School, which could mean anything. 🤷‍♂️

  This post makes the very good point that it would be difficult for academics in #Ireland to work to rule when we lack fixed hours, days, or holiday entitlements. Academic contracts are intentionally vague, which works in institutions’ favour. #HigherEducation #Academia

  I don’t think this kind of loose arrangement is fit for the 21st Century. Academics should be entitled to downtime and annual leave just like everyone else. But #academia relies upon goodwill for core functions as much as for ‘extras’ like external examining, reviewing and extracurricular events.
