The Shadow Of The Past was always my favourite chapter, and maybe in any book. I do love a big hefty slab of increasingly creepy backstory. (This is why the start of Dune is the best bit, I think, better than the crash bang wallop later on. It takes real skill to pull off such a massive infodump).

Rory quite forgave Bilbo (after his gift of a quantity of very fancy wine) and voted him a capital fellow, after the first bottle.

I haven’t read the Lord of the Rings for about 25 years and I forgot how charming the first chapter is. Everyone judgemental and suspicious of Bilbo but only too delighted to enjoy his hospitality, his pointed presents to his family and neighbours.
