  Califia understood early that marginalized communities would inevitably bear the highest costs of moral regulation. Queer people. Leather communities. Trans people. Sex workers. Poor women. Criminalized women. Anyone living outside the boundaries of middle-class respectability.

  Pat Califia remains deliberately overlooked, in both feminist and LGBTQ history. Califia's work was foundational. It was, for large portions of the institutional feminist world, deeply unwelcome - and that combination of foundational and unwelcome is precisely why the erasure has been so persistent.
