    I lost a leg when I was 7. I grew up noticing the stares and the inquisitive curiosity of children when they saw my prosthetic leg. I was so young when I lost my leg that I didn't realize you could lose an arm or a leg and still live. I didn't know I lost it until I saw it under the bed covers.

    Never dismiss the curiosity of a child. It's how they learn. There should be no shame in asking questions. It's only shameful when we deny them answers.

    When my oldest son was about 5, he asked the same thing and my answer was very similar. My youngest son was not so thoughtful. We saw a really heavy woman at the store and in his loudest voice possible yelled look at that really fat lady. To her credit, she winked and smiled at my beet red face.

    I use both a walker and a wheelchair...If a child asked me, I'd certainly tell them why, and I would answer any and ALL questions they had...It's called being curious, and that's a good thing...
