I have another technical question I've been meaning to ask (thank you for answering all my process questions). I notice that you leave extra material on your bases which, I assume, gets cut off after painting. What's your process for finishing the bases after that cut? Do you just sand it flat?

Ah, that makes sense. I was imagining the paint would be too delicate to go back in the chuck but I guess you could use padded jaws? Or just be careful.
