I don't think it's a coincidence, though, that a lot of the folks I know personally who are like this are Posters, given that Posting is arguably the antithesis of brunch/partying/socializing (indolent! luxurious!) versus writing Posts on the internet (disciplined! Advancing the Revolution!)

There is, I think, a feeling that joy and happiness are the same as complacency, and that people must foreswear any of the former to avoid the other. That people have to essentially be flogged into battle. But I think that mostly comes out of certain people's personal ascetisicm

One or two people I know IRL have been publicly poo-pooing midterm enthusiasm on the terms that "liberals are just going to return to brunch," and I think it crystalized something for me, which is that there is a tendency within some of our movements to be deeply, venomously suspicious of joy
