(Previous transphobic rhetoric liked to play the "you're just reinforcing gender stereotypes, you don't have to be a man to do masculine things/vice versa" card and sometimes used the existence of nonbinary people to support this.)
Ver post(And of course, transfeminine nonhinary people get the shit end of both sticks.) There's a Jude Doyle quote about how under patriarchy, a trans woman is a traitor, a trans man is a thief, and a nonbinary person is crazy for attesting to a reality that "does not and cannot exist."
Ver postBut you're right that if modern transphobes are going to make a distinction between trans men and women vs. nonbinary people, they're doing it because they hate nonbinary people. Older transphobic arguments used to do something VERY different, but you don't see it these days.
Ver postI think that this downplays the role that transmisogyny specifically plays. I was getting a lot of anti-trans ads leading up to the midterms, and it was about 2/3 anti-trans women and girls, with the remaining 1/3 being either attacks on trans people in general or nonbinary people specifically.
