I contain multitudes; an old pilot trying to make more old pilots. Illinois! Very food motivated. Views not those of the DoD or US Gov't. He/him.

I've been tracking this aesthetic in memes since about 2022 (starting with NATOwave edits, which boomed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine) and it's actually kind of genius. It's a subversion of a fashy meme aesthetic that exploits a major loophole in that aesthetic: the era it riffs on.

The early NATOwave edits, and the recent "remember who you are liberal" memes replace a militarist fashy fiction with images of transnational democratic solidarity (militant and otherwise) that *are in fact very cool and good*. The meme works and lib/progressivism appropriated and subverted it.
