    Time to remove the standing charge altogether and have a low initial unit rate that steps up the higher your usage. Encourages lower carbon emissions and helps the poorest.

    Yup. Me and your mum both trying to bail out the same boat, that the energy co's keep trying to sink. My current deal is a little better, but still: My last gas statement for 30 days (mid August to mid September) pre-VAT: £2.88 for the gas £7.86 standing charge

    One of the reasons: Ofgem have allowed the costs of transferring customers from failing energy companies (dozens in recent years) to new providers to be recovered through increased standing charges... Means users of less energy see highest percentage increase in overall bill... Fair? I think not!
